Power is often of great interest to people, and personal power is part of what distinguishes the shaman. Some want to hold power over others, thinking it will make them more personally powerful. Some want control of all that is around them, perhaps to make them feel safer, or to assert the dominance of their own ego and the sense of their own righteousness--which may be the same thing.

At the core of the shamanic practitioner, personal power gives strength to the individual's ability to focus, weight to their intentions, and vigor to their presence. Along with this must come a clear sense of responsibility and an impeccable code of ethics. She or he always acts within a vision of the whole of life, in alliance with compassionate and helping spirits, and any effective change in the world can only be made through the power of this vision.

In an untrammeled area of the mountain, there rests a complex bench of stacked stones that emanates earth and stone power. On this hike and at this Seat of Power, we will:

-Be guided and guarded by the Woodpecker Clan

-Walk among the dried autumnal grasses

-Wind up a still-seeping creek-bed and meander up through a fir woods on a wonderful unmarked trail

-Pass through a rather strange and haunting cypress forest

-Contact the guardian presence of a giant erratic boulder

And with the guidance of our compassionate spirit allies:

-Examine the dynamics of transmitted and personal power

-Explore how power is given and how it may be developed and held responsibly

-Sit and be empowered in the Seat of Power

-Learn to build and hold our true personal power

The Autumnal Equinox has passed, we have now formally entered the Fall of the year, and as the nights lengthen, it is time to look within where our personal power lies. Just after Halloween, All Souls Day and Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), the veil between worlds thins and the world of spirit becomes more readily accessible.  We hope you can join us at this extraordinary time for this short hike and powerful exploration in this secret spot on the mountain!

This is a 2 to 2.5 mile round-trip hike, with perhaps a 400 foot change in elevation over the course of the walk.

We would love to have you with us on this hike/mini workshop on November 2nd.  Click here to register or for more information.

For over forty years, Steve has been doing ceremony and hiking around the shoulders of our local mother-mountain.

On these visits to Mt. Tam, we will hike with mindfulness to key power spots, many secret or hidden from casual view.  There, we will bond with the presence of the mountain, perform ceremony, make offerings and honor the local spirits.  We will connect with the power and heart of the land, and with each other, heart to heart.

Steve Orsary is a shamanic practitioner, healer and poet who  has  hiked thousands of miles, many of them around Mt. Tam where he has walked every trail on the map and many that aren't. He and his wife, MaryAnn, work in Corte Madera where they practice Bioenergy Balancing, shamanic healing and body-centered psychotherapy.
